Nursing Unions Advancing Staffing Ratios

Nursing unions across the country are pushing state legislation mandating nurse-to-patient staffing ratios (staffing ratios). These laws do not support healthcare workers in the way healthcare workers need, do not address the underlying issues driving healthcare shortages, and compromise the high-quality delivery of healthcare on which patients rely.

Some states may already have staffing committees and regulations in place, and be considering additional legislation. For example, Massachusetts implemented staffing ratios in its Intensive Care Units in 2014, and is now considering legislation to implement staffing ratios across all units.
